Green Land Café: A cherry on top!

Hi - Matt here!
A couple weekends back Jen and I went out to celebrate her birthday with two very special guest diners – Jack and Debbie, Jen’s parents.  We picked Green Land Café, which is located right in downtown Salem. It is very convenient from the train stop – just 200 yards down Washington Street.  Greenland takes pride in “fresh thinking”.  They have shaped their restaurant around sustainability and organic ingredients, grown and harvested locally. Their commitment to sustainability shows throughout the restaurant – including the bar constructed from the building’s original oak doors that were found in the attic when the restaurant was being built.

Arrrrrrgghhh you going to Boston??

Salem Ferry season starts May 27th  - this Friday!   Now if that doesn’t have you digging out your stripes and dusting off your boat shoes, then this certainly will:   round-trip ferry tickets are only $9 today on Living Social!  Click here to go to the deal.  That’s better than the train (gasp!)
Not that we have ever needed an excuse to hop on board a boat, enjoy a couple of cocktails, or take in the ocean air - but now this is really a no-brainer.
The Ferry runs from Salem to Long Wharf  in Boston and the restaurant possibilities on each side of this trip are ENDLESS!!  So whether you’re headed in- or outbound, the ferry is not only a fabulous alternative to traffic and parking woes, but also a great tour of the North Shore *longing sigh…*
We’re dedicating all of August to Salem restaurants so if you’re interested in giving one a try, or want to play tour guide for the day while entertaining out-of-towners, snatch up a couple of these reduced-fare tickets.  We’ll take the opportunity to hit up our favorites in the North End.  Bricco anyone?
And just think - if you invite a big enough group of your friends, you can pretend it’s your own private yacht.  Now what else could you ask for really?

See you on the high seas :) !

Soma - SoMany Good Drinks!

Jen here! A few Saturday nights ago Matt and I headed to Soma to celebrate the 3rd anniversary of his 29th birthday!

Although we didn’t arrive via choo-choo, Soma is located on Cabot Street only a quick 10 minute walk away (.5 mile) from the Beverly Depot train station. So it is easily accessible by commuter rail or car.

We reserved the overly large square table in the bar (our favorite table) and enjoyed many delicious dishes and drinks with 4 guest diners: Rich & Sarah and Chris & Keira.

Not enough North Shore restaurants have such a stylish, yet comfortable ambiance that draws you in and wraps around you. The dark wood floor, big cozy booth and perfect chillaxing music makes you feel relaxed and excited at the same time. Soma gets an A for lighting. The hanging jelly fish lights dance above you at the bar and the perfectly lit dining room creates a cool vibe. (Oh! And I think they were one of the first restaurants ever to have the Xlerator, which is my favorite invention of the 21st century. It beats out the Dyson Airblade any day of the week.)

Beyond super cool bathroom technologies, Soma has one of the best drink menus around. The martinis range from perfect pre-dinner libations (The Strawberry Basil Martini or Bourbon Soma Smash) to perfect-ending liquid desserts (The Banana Bread martini – my fave!)

We started with a few delicious appetizers – Classic Caesar Salad for Mr. Matty, Rhode Island style fried calamari for Rich and beet salad with “zingy” dressing for Sarah. Round 1 was a success.

Entrees were the piece-de-resistance. After inquiring with our waitress “what’s the deal with the seasonal vegetable soup” and her response being “it is amazing,” I went right for it – no more questions asked. It was fresh spring vegetables, vegetable nage, parmesan cheese and extra virgin olive oil served in a gorgeous bowl. She was right – it was amazing.

(High) Fives All Around

Oops, no outside cakes in Maine restaurants.  This was a nice alternative.
Andy comin’ at ya, belatedly.  A few weeks back, Jaime and I drove *wince* up to Portland for a birthday brunch with my mom at a fantastic restaurant called five fifty-five(Wow, strong showing by the moms lately on Choo-Chew!)  Portland is a perfect meeting spot between Salem and where I grew up in Maine, and it’s also a place we all love to visit for day trips and long weekends.  (Although we skipped the train and drove this time, we did do some reconnaissance on the Amtrak Downeaster.  See the last paragraph.)

WE HIT THE MOTHER LOAD!!!

This weekend marked the first annual Choo-Chew Mother’s Day extravaganza!   You guessed it – Jen and I treated our mums (Gerry and Deb) to lunch at Manchester-by-the Sea’s Cala’s in exchange for culinary opinions and always-entertaining pleasantries.   Here’s the thing:  we typically don’t have to treat to hear these ladies’ thoughts and opinions.  That’s what we love about them!   But seeing that it was Mother’s Day this weekend, it only seemed right to spoil our mums a bit for a change.  Now, add in two of our nearest and dearest – Laura and Nicole – and Laura’s mother Ann, and we’re talking about a party of seven not to be reckoned with.   Everyone was in true form!

We cozied into a booth in the front of the comfortable and casual restaurant.  We started (rather quickly and in typical fashion) with drinks served up by Cala’s famed bartender, Scotty – an area celebrity.  A couple of Moscow Mules, Sangria Margaritas, and glasses of Kim Crawford and we were off!
The lunch menu offered good diversity and the salads – perfect lunch portions – were a big hit.
I opted for the Grilled Calamari Salad.  Mixed greens, roasted tomatoes, grilled onions, kalamata olives, and feta cheese topped with delicious grilled calamari.   The salad was drizzled with a light lemon vinaigrette and polenta croutons which were a creative touch.  To die for.  I was so happy with my choice.  No meal envy – that’s right, you heard me.

Gerry and Jen tried the Arugula Salad, which was arugula topped with sunflower seeds, chevre goat cheese, and grilled sweet potatoes.  The dressing was a maple cider vinaigrette that the table loved.  The potatoes were a nice texture against the arugula and this salad produced smiles all around.

Ann ordered the Spinach Salad and loved the different combination of tastes making this salad different from your typical spinach salad – it even gave her the urge to break into song and dance, or maybe those were synchronized swimming moves?!  The salad included “naked” walnuts, blue cheese crostini and tomato confit served with a warm applewood smoked bacon balsamic dressing. Delish.

Laura’s West Coast Spring Rolls – stuffed with mango, pickled cilantro, and veggies – made their way around the table and got a unanimous “thumbs-up” on taste and presentation.  The spring rolls were served with a mango dipping sauce which was thought to be a little too sweet for most, but a beautiful orange color.

An interesting addition to the menu was the option for a BAKED fish sandwich. Nicole and Deb opted for this take on a good old standby.  We were a little skeptical at first, but truly satisfied with the outcome, as the baked fish sandwich got great reviews and proved to be a fabulous alternative.  The sandwich was served with a mound of hand-cut fries and some good “slaw.”

No room for dessert, but we all finished our meal with hot coffees to help digest and re-collect ourselves after a session of tear-producing laughter.  When the coffees arrived, the smell was overwhelming – a fabulous end to a relaxing afternoon at Cala’s.  Good food, good laughs, good company.  Cala’s was the perfect selection for our first Choo-Chew Mother’s Day outing.

Manchester-by-the-Sea is a quick ride from Salem/Beverly and on the Rockport line.  If you’re from the North Shore, you probably know your way around.  If you're itching to get out of city, especially as the weather starts warming up, head to Manchester – it makes for a great day out.   Make sure to stop by the small boutiques, the Stock Exchange, and of course Singing Beach – an easy walk or bike ride from the station.

Happy Mother's Day, Moms!!

Aziz Ansari: Right on Trend

I almost slid off the paper-covered doctor’s table when I found this article on the inside back cover of May’s Bon Appétit: The Italy Issue.

Although it’s a bit of a stretch between Aziz’s dreams and our Choo-Chew escapades, there is something here that has brought us a step closer to our favorite Parks and Recreation actor.

He was asked in the magazine's first Back of the Napkin Q&A, “You live in L.A., food truck capital of the world, what’s the scene missing?"

If you can’t decipher the handwriting, his reply is:

“You know what they need to start? A food train trend. So get this – you get one train car, an old one that is fueled by a wood burning engine. Here’s the genius – the wood would also power the wood fired pizza oven! I know nothing about pizza ovens or trains, but that sounds like it would be easy to rig. Maybe the people at Keste or Grimaldi’s in NYC can figure that out.”

You can find the rest of this "just-what-the-doctor-ordered" article here.

Aziz – if you’re listening – I know nothing about pizza ovens, or trains for that matter, but this idea is ingenious and I Love You!

Cheers!
Jen

Spring Has Sprung @ 15 Walnut

Last night Matt and I grabbed a spur-of-the-moment bite out at 15 Walnut and were happily surprised to find the spring menu in all its freshness and glory.

I started with the Spring Thai Soup with fresh local spring vegetables, lemongrass and ginger broth. Delish and vegan! For my entrée I tried the Spring Panzanella Salad with asparagus, pea shoots, spring onions, arugula and croutons. I opted sans prosciutto. I still haven’t decided if I liked it or not. Give me a rustic panzanella salad any day of the week, but it didn’t quite deliver to my expectations. My latest opinion is people who like peppery arugula and green goddess dressing will sing its praises. I, however, pushed it around a bit and felt a little guilty when the server cleared our plates.

Matt of course had Caesar salad and shocked the waiter when he ordered a burger instead of his go-to roasted chicken. It was cooked perfectly and rightly paired with a few Whale’s Tale Pale Ales.

The spring menu made me forget my allergies for a couple of hours and reminded me why spring is my 2nd favorite season – fresh produce!
